Hi there. Does anyone have any session plans on back row support of 12 taking quick ball off the top of a lineout?
Stephe
I am not sure what a session plan for this would look like - you will need to practise with your team moves designed to get the ball to 12 as quickly as possible so as to maximise the benfit of the 10 metre offside gap.
South Africa have used a back of the line out ball where the catcher passes the ball directly to the 12 coming up fast - the ball was passed from the top of the jump which required great skill and precision but was incredibly effective!
If you are using middle ball then try to ensure your 7 and 8 run a fairly flat line to enable them to support the breakdown as quickly as possible.
I hope this helps

Simon, Thanks for the suggestions. I realise it's not an easy topic to have a session plan for, which is why I was hoping someone else had dealt with this headache before. Purely tactically, I'd prefer either a middle ball to 9 to 12 ( to free up the back 3 in a support line) or shortened lineout with 6 and 8 just behind 12 to ensure continuity. I think using back ball - whilst providing quickest route to 12 - limits your support lines from the lineout. What do you think? Stephe

If your 12 is strong runner and can break the tackle line then I would suggest using a full lineout and getting your back row in quick support.
If you shorten the line out then their back row will defend and you will lose the advantage of your powerful runner.
In terms of running sessions it might be that you run this play in a modified game where you brief attack and defence seperately so it becomes "real."
Good luck
Simon
